Is there a specific style of Jewish art? Scholarly discussion of Jewish art has often denied its very existence. Nevertheless, evidence of Jewish visual creativity from Late Antiquity to the Modern period points to the fact that there is a genuine style of Jewish art.
In this course, we will look at a wealth of material on this topic: historical texts, rabbinic responsa, art criticism and Jewish visual culture from antiquity to the present.
We will also examine how Jewish creativity has been affected by antisemitism and anti-Jewish iconography in Christian art.
Finally, we will investigate the impact of assimilation and acculturation of Jews from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century on Jewish art.
