In this course, we will look at Canadian Jewish writing. It is a diverse body of work. Originating with Ashkenazi male writers in Montreal, it grew to include works by writers from varied backgrounds, living in different cities and committed to a range of Canadian experiences. We will read these works, explore where there is intertextual dialogue and consider whether there is a kind of cohesion that creates a unified genre of Canadian Jewish literature.
Authors Include: J.J. Segal, A.M. Klein, Mordecai Richler, Leonard Cohen, Chava Rosenfarb, Naim Kattan, Henry Kreisel and David Bezmozgis.
