Course: Naharayim – Psychoanalytic Thinking Meets Hassidic Wisdom

Naharayim is an interdisciplinary learning program weaving the inner wisdom of Hasidic spiritual traditions with insights from modern psychoanalytic thought. Like rivers merging and mixing into a single, stronger current, the program explores how classical Jewish teachings and contemporary psychological perspectives can illuminate self-discovery, intimate creativity, and inner transformation.

Naharayim offers a safe space for Jewish therapists, clergy, chaplains, professionals, and social workers to learn and talk together.

Through text study, reflective writing, and the tools of experiential engagement, participants encounter Hasidic teachings not only as historical sources but also as living psychological and spiritual resources. Drawing on thinkers from both traditions—Hasidic masters alongside psychoanalysts including: Carl Jung, Wilfred Bion and Donald Winnicott—the program invites participants to explore the depths of intuition, ethical growth, and interpersonal relationships.

Course Descriptions:

Visionary Creativity – Intention and Intuition in Hassidic Stories
Dr. David Lester (Bibliotherapist)

Many Hassidic stories present people who were especially sensitive to their own intuitions. These moments of insight are presented as personal moments of revelation. In this sense Hassidism understands prophecy not only as a skill used during biblical times but as an experience accessible during certain moments of openness and inspiration.

The course will present a plethora of Hassidic stories that raise questions like: How does one become more sensitive to their own intuitions? Is it possible to navigate through one’s own intentions? When is listening to one’s own intuitions especially important? Carl Jung’s discussion of visionary creativity will be employed to help elucidate different elements in the stories and writing exercises will be offered as a way to reflect upon and process the learning.

Dreamwork – Hassidic Visions and Psychoanalytic Traditions
Mordechai Zeller (Clinical Psychologist)

Join us as we delve into ancient dream narratives from the Bible, Talmud, and Zohar, as well as from the diaries of mystics and Hasidic masters. We will read these sources together with classic psychological thinkers—from Freud and Jung to Bion, Ogden, and Eigen.

Each session focuses on archetypal and recurring dream images, tracing them through early appearances in Jewish sources and exploring their psychological meanings. Each session will include a text-based learning segment, followed by an invitation to learn about and engage with personal dreamwork. This course is for dreamers, seekers, therapists, teachers, artists—and anyone tired enough of waking life to begin dreaming again.

Connected, Entwined, Transformed – Relationships and the Self in Rebbe Nachman’s Tales
Dr. Batya Bing (Bibliotherapist)

Many Hassidic stories focus on the intricate dynamics of various interpersonal relationships including parents and children, rabbi and students, king and citizens, and between friends. Rebbe Nachman approaches this complex realm through the use of metaphors and symbols. Psychoanalytic theories examine the ways in which relationships become a matrix for growth or a structure that stunts development. Wilfred Bion discusses how the mother-baby dyad can serve as a model for understanding all close relationships.

With the help of Hassidic wisdom and psychoanalytic understanding, we will explore how to engage life with our most integrated self and bring vitality into our relationships.

Tshuvah of the Soul – The Movement of Individual Redemption
Dr. Levi Weinstein (Drama Therapist)

Teshuva, repentance, is so much more than acknowledging our mistakes. The spiritual traditions of Judaism view teshuva as an internal process of self-improvement and self-refinement. In this course we will contemplate the psychological process of teshuva as presented by the Hassidic master Rabbi Zadok Hakohen of Lublin (d. 1900). Rabbi Zadok’s radical approach to the paradox of free will drives his unique analysis of the personal process involved with confronting our internal demons, accepting accountability and developing a higher consciousness.
