Some of the most interesting, perceptive and artistically innovative Jewish literature was produced by a number of Jews who wrote during the first half of the 20th century. Influenced by high-modernism, often assimilated but keenly attuned to their identity and stature as Jews, their work is sensitive, and a powerful expression of the rapidly changing world in which they lived. Whether or not they survived the darkness of the Nazi era, or experienced pre-Holocaust anti-Semitism, these writers were deeply invested in their attempts to express the reality of Jewish existence in unprecedented times.
Authors Include: Franz Kafka, Amy Levy, Israel Zangwill, Lion Feuchtwanger, Bruno Schultz, Primo Levi, Arthur Koestler, Elias Canetti, Ida Fink. and more.
