Drawing on biblical narratives, midrash, and visual and literary arts, Dr. Milgrom encourages participants untrained in art to express their own commentary, emotions, experiences and thought through playful reuse of the discards (throwaways) of daily life. Since there is no need to make something ‘beautiful,’ results are often surprisingly insightful and moving. There are no requirements to take this course except the willingness to step out of the old patterns of doing things. Classes are at the artist’s studio in Jerusalem.
The creator and facilitator of the Handmade Midrash Workshop, Dr. Jo Milgrom has lectured in the Judaism and the Arts M.A. program at the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies for over 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in Theology and the Arts and is the author of Handmade Midrash (published in both English and Hebrew), which is available through the author.
