In this course we will examine central narratives of Sefer Bamidbar and explore life “in the desert,” that is, a landscape of vast horizons and opportunities, as well as desolation and disappointment. Among the texts we will consider are the trial of the sotah; the perpetual complaining of the Israelites about a lack of food/nurturance; the story of the spies; Korach’s rebellion; Moshe’s fateful striking of the rock, and more. A wide variety of interpretive perspectives will be employed to bring out fresh and deep meanings from these narratives.
