While today Tuscany’s largest Jewish community is based in Florence, the beautiful city of art, in the Late Middle Ages the Jews settled throughout Tuscany, in its larger towns as Pisa, and Siena as well as in small towns as San Miniato and Monte San Savino.
In this course, we will travel virtually around Tuscany in search of its hidden rich Jewish history. We will investigate why the charming town of Pitigliano is also named “Little Jerusalem”, how the Jews of Tuscany had a strong influence on the intellectual and artistic scene in late nineteenth century, explore modern issues such as how the city of Florence is responding to its recently elected Jewish woman mayor, and many other fascinating questions.
