Starting from the ancient Roman period, Southern Italy was the home of many vital Jewish communities. From the 8th century, Southern Italy contained a famous center of Jewish learning which attracted Jewish scholars from all around the Mediterranean countries. In the 16th century, due to the Spanish rule and the expulsion of Jews from Southern Italy, all this disappeared. Yet Judaism was not totally forgotten and remained part of the culture.

This course will be a moving journey in search of the clear traces of the Jewish life in this fascinating region.
