In this course we will read memoirs of Jews, some famous and celebrated, others less so, but all with illuminating observations and insights relating to Jewish life, history and culture. The texts to be included are not only compelling narratives of individual histories, but pieces of literary storytelling. They convey events, reflections and reactions, and make these elements come alive with evocative, engrossing writing that dramatizes experiences through a Jewish lens. Authors to be included are Andre Aciman, Shalom Auslander, Primo Levi, Albert Memmi, Rose Cohen, I.B. Singer, Stefan Zweig, Chava Rosenfarb, Saul Bellow and Maxim Shrayer.
