In this course, we look at the literary strategy of storytelling through the eyes of child narrators. In these acclaimed texts, perspectives, observations, interactions, and literary discourse take on a subtle, yet powerful element as they are interwoven into the innocence and wisdom of young narrative voices that are both frank and deceptively sophisticated. Our texts, from writers of varying backgrounds, times, and places are compelling literary constructs that insist on contemplation and reconsiderations of Jewish life, culture, customs, and norms with surprising candor usually free of the inflections of cynicism and experience that underscore adult voices. Authors to be included: Shalom Abramowitz (Mendele Mokher Sforim), Isaac Babel, Henry Roth, S.Y. Agnon, Nicole Krauss, and Ayelet Tzabari.
Most texts will be distributed except for Call It Sleep by Henry Roth (1934), which students should acquire.
