What does the term Renaissance mean to the Jews of the time and a historian of Jewish history? By the early sixteenth century, European Jews lived in peace only in Italy. Was this status related to the Renaissance? We will examine the internal structure of the Jewish community and the seeming selective adoption of Renaissance culture as integral expressions of Jewish cultural identity. At the same time, we will study the Counter-Reformation policies that introduced a radical change in Jewish life including early modern ghettoization. Issues of openness and insularity, integration, and segregation connect this crucial period to the present day.
