Why were Jews put on trial? How do they reveal the underlying antisemitism, the subtle interplay of threats and fears, of attacks and withdrawals, which form the textual fabric of these types of dialogues throughout history?

We will attempt to uncover the motives and forces behind various court cases starting with the trial of Jesus in the first century, moving to ritual murder and Inquisitional trials in Europe, and continuing with a trial scene in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice.  We will examine a case in Syria in 1840, where Jews were falsely accused of murdering a Catholic monk as well as the fascinating case of the 1858 kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, a six-year-old Jewish boy who had been secretly “baptized” by a family servant. We will study the Mendal Beilis trial and that of Alfred Dreyfus. Finally, we will witness a trial in which Jews became the prosecutors – that of Adolf Eichman in the State of Israel.
