This course will explore contemporary concepts, dilemmas and theories that underlie Jewish ethics. Among questions to be discussed: the ethics of vaccination and the question of social responsibility; ethical dilemmas for parents and grandparents; abortion and personhood; euthanasia and autonomy; infertility and medical intervention in halacha; keeping secrets and the ethics of confidentiality.
Elliott Malamet received his doctorate from the University of Toronto, where he taught from 1987-1993. A lecturer in Jewish Philosophy in Canadian universities for 20 years, Dr. Malamet now teaches at the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the London School of Jewish Studies, the University of Waterloo and Yeshivat Machanaim. His work on spirituality and Jewish values has been featured in Canadian newspapers, radio and television.
