Looking at texts that span nearly two centuries, we will see how writers from different times and places have perceived Israel.
Whether they write about Israel under Ottoman rule, as part of the British Empire or as an independent, modern Jewish nation, they describe it powerfully. For some it is a place that is harsh and forlorn. Others find it singularly inspiring and exotic. Many consider it precious, yet conflictual.
In this course, we will address these varied reactions, consider how cultural and religious bias impact these impressions and whether Israel can be encapsulated by the writer’s pen.
Authors to be addressed will include Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Haim Hazaz, A.M. Klein, Leon Uris, I.B. Singer, Howard Jacobson, Joan Leegant, Ayelet Tsabari and Iddo Gefen.
