In this course we will read highly inventive texts by Russian-American Jewish Writers, which present complex characters who are pressed to manage their hybrid identities. As Russian emigres, these characters are often framed by American Jews as insufficiently Jewish, culturally distant from the hum of “authentic” Jewish living. At the same time, they have a sense of themselves as being Jews in that they are unmistakably “other.” Moreover, they are haunted by echoes of anti-Jewish vitriol from their homelands that leads them to view American Jews as naively ignorant about what it “truly” means to be a Jew. The authors we will be reading are among those that have been hailed as the freshest and most perspicacious writers of the last two decades: Gary Shteyngart, David Bezmozgis, Lara Vapnyar, Boris Fishman, Sana Krasikov, Maxim Shrayer and Irina Reyn.
