A series of four case-studies on the Holocaust and the study of ancient Jewish history. Of them, one is devoted to exposing how the troubled career of Philipp Jaffé, a German-Jewish medievalist who committed suicide in 1870, played a significant role in the genesis of the Holocaust. The other three will demonstrate how, directly and indirectly, the Holocaust impacted on the study of ancient Jewish history: on modern views of Herod; on modern interpretations of Paul’s views on Judaism; and on Christian study of ancient Jewish rebels (“Zealots”).
