Our course will examine art in Israel from the founding of the Zionist movement in Europe at the turn of the 20th century through the next 100 years. We will start with the establishment of the Bezalel School of Art in 1906, continue with a study of the ambience of the 1920s with exotic sand and camels, cover the French and German influences that were prevalent in the 1930s, and survey the Canaanite art style that emerged in the 1940s. We will then discuss the “New Horizons” movement, the schools of “Social Realism” and “National Symbolism,” the foreign influences of the 1960s, and the “New Jerusalem School,” which developed toward the end of the century. We will also talk about the social and political realities of the 20th century that impacted Israeli art.
