In this course, we will examine the Ten Commandments in light of the Ancient Near Eastern context in which they were created. We will explore the following questions:

  • How similar are Biblical commandments to neighboring ancient law codes?
  • What did we copy, what did we edit, what is uniquely ours?

We will also survey the context of modern life in Israel and probe the dilemma of how to celebrate Shabbat in a modern, secular- yet Jewish- State.

We will study the Prof. (Ruth) Gavison – (Rav) Meidan Covenant, an attempt to outline a plan for a respectful Shabbat while considering both religious and secular sensibilities.
