Prof. Walter I. Ackerman (1925-2003) was one of the leading Jewish educators of the second half of the twentieth century, both as a practitioner and as a theorist. He served as Director of Camp Yavneh, Director of Camps Ramah in California and Canada; Director of The United Synagogue Commission on Jewish Education; Dean of the University of Judaism in Los Angeles and later Vice President for Academic Affairs; Chair of the Education Department, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences and Shane Family Professor of Education at Ben-Gurion University; Member of the Israeli Council for Higher Education; Dean of Education at the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies; and Chair of the TALI Education Fund.
Prof. Ackerman authored over 100 books, articles, reports and book reviews. This anthology of his articles is divided into four parts: Sociology of American Jewish Education, History of American Jewish Education, the Curricula of American Jewish Education, and Israeli Education.
