In this course, we will examine some of the pressing moral concerns that Jews, both in Israel and the Diaspora, are contending with at present. We will begin by exploring, within the realm of Jewish ethics, the agonizing problems of the current war, from the complexity within Jewish law of ransoming hostages, to the question of innocent civilians within warfare.
We will then address some of the material situations that Jews finds themselves in globally: the rise of antisemitism and the temptation to hide signs of one’s Jewishness; the question of if and how Jews should reply or even argue with comments or opinions expressed about Israel – in the street and in schools, in the media and social media.
Is there an obligation to respond, and in what way? Would it be wiser to refrain?
